I got many gifts from my time at HopeWay, including my health and healing. Art is a new thing in my life that I’m very proud of and remains an integral part of my continued road to solid mental health. That stigma is a big part of the problem HopeWay is designed to solve, or at least ease. The private and public sectors in Charlotte and elsewhere offer little for them.
HopeWay is located at 1717 Sharon Road West in southwest Charlotte on a 20-acre wooded campus. The centerpiece is a 52,000 square foot building that was renovated and designed by Perkins + Will, an architecture firm specializing in design for behavioral health and therapeutic environments. A FEW MINUTES into a tour of HopeWay, the only mental health treatment center of its kind in North Carolina, Dee Grano speaks up. It’s a bright Thursday morning in early November, a few weeks before the south Charlotte facility is scheduled to open. Grano handles public relations for the facility, and our tour has landed in the center’s art therapy room. Instructor Marianne Huebner and HopeWay’s CEO and chief medical officer, Dr. Alyson Kuroski-Mazzei, are in the room, too.
HopeWay's mission is to make HOPE tangible by inspiring mental wellness for all. HopeWay helps fill the gap between hospital and home by offering voluntary residential and day treatment programs. Our holistic model of treatment, which is grounded in science, addresses the medical, psychological and emotional needs of our clients as we equip them with the tools they need to live a successful and independent life. HopeWay also offers special services for Veterans who are struggling with PTSD and other related mental health conditions. Parallel to our mission of offering top-notch mental health care, HopeWay provides educational opportunities for the community to help normalize the conversation around mental health.
Evening hours and weekends allow time to rest, process and practice what is learned during the day. Optional weekend activities include meditation groups, journaling, yoga, art, other recreational activities, and time for visitation from loved ones. 30 days is the average length of time spent in our residential program. Clients can enter at any level of care depending on their clinical needs. 46% of clients in our Residential and Partial Hospitalization Programs transition to another level of care. That includes psychotherapy, medication management, integrative therapies and on-site educational support. The team will treat mental health diagnoses in teens and eating disorders in teens and young adults through out-patient programming. Our Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) offer full-day treatment that can serve as a step-down from acute or residential care or as a more intensive option to outpatient services. These programs include individual, group and integrative therapies.
A certified art therapist leads art therapy activities in the uplifting and energizing Art Room that includes a kiln for clay work and pottery. Behavioral health programs in Charlotte have rarely, if ever, included art therapy as part of their treatment approach. Yet considerable scientific evidence supports the strong value that expressive and creative artistic activities provide clients struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Our residential program offers a unique opportunity, where clients have a calm and therapeutic living environment that supports their treatment journey towards mental wellness and healing.
